Dental Sealants

Brushing and flossing are essential tasks to help you maintain your oral health. Unfortunately, not every part of your mouth can be reached with regular brushing and flossing.

At Noles Family Dental, we understand the role dental sealants play in helping to prevent tooth decay and cavities. We believe it is so beneficial that we recommend all patients consider incorporating it into their treatment plan.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants create protective barriers that act as a first line of defense against tooth decay.

Upon application, sealants “fill and cover” the bumpy, grooved chewing surfaces of the teeth in the back of the mouth. This forms a strong barrier that prevents cavity-causing bacteria from accumulating in these difficult-to-reach areas.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants?

Children benefit the most from dental sealants. The enamel of the newly formed permanent teeth is often softer, making them extremely susceptible to cavities and tooth decay. The earlier dental sealants are applied to permanent teeth, the more you will benefit from them.

Children are good candidates for dental sealants when they get their permanent molars. This typically occurs between the ages of 6 and 14.

Adults can also benefit from dental sealants. Even though fully-formed permanent teeth are stronger, they can still be affected by tooth decay. Sealants add an extra layer of protection that makes it harder for bacteria and acid to cause cavities and other dental problems.

How Long Do Dental Sealants Provide Protection Against Tooth Decay?

With proper maintenance, dental sealants can last up to 10 years before needing to be reapplied. Our dental staff can help you get the most out of your dental sealants by creating a dental maintenance plan that includes regularly scheduled examinations and professional cleanings.

Every patient is different as to when they will need to have dental sealants reapplied. Our dental staff will inspect your sealants as part of your routine dental examination and cleaning. We look to see if they are intact and performing properly. If any problems are noticed, we can perform any touch-ups or reapplication during your appointment.

Dental Sealant Application Is Quick, Easy and Pain-Free

Sealants are so quick and easy to apply that their application is often performed as part of a routine dental examination and cleaning.

Before application, our dental staff will examine your teeth to determine if any decay is present. If no decay is present, our hygienist will cover the chewing surface of the back teeth with a thin plastic coating material. An ultraviolet light is then used to harden the coating and create a strong protective barrier that prevents tooth decay.
